For decades, the prevailing economic theory has been that companies’ primary role in society was to maximize profit and shareholders’ return. Companies, governments and the general public have concluded over the past few years that the role of companies is actually much larger: they ought to contribute to society and prosperity by focusing on their roles as economically, environmentally and ethically sustainable entities. In other words, they need to be responsible socially as corporate citizens of the world.
Over the past year, the meetings industry awakened to the power of CSR as a business trend. While this mostly manifests itself with an increased awareness of “green meetings” practices and implementation, there is a larger picture to be considered. CSR is often referred to as the “triple bottom line” of people, planet, and profit, recognizing that social and environmental sustainability helps organizations achieve economic sustainability and prosperity in the long term.
In this session, you will be given an introduction to three levels of CSR knowledge:
Level 1:
- Define CSR and other key terms
- Discover what is meant by the triple bottom line and how it relates to the meetings industry
Level 2:
- Identify trends affecting CSR globally and within the meetings industry
- Learn what a carbon offset is, how it works, and how to evaluate them
Level 3:
- Review case studies of MPI events to improve the sustainability of your own events
Speaker Bio
Elizabeth Henderson works with Meeting Professionals International, a global association with over 24,000 members as their Director of Social Corporate Responsibility. She works to incorporate the principles of the UN Global Compact into global operations, following the sustainable triple bottom line of people, planet and profit.
She has an eclectic background and holds three university degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in History, a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geography (with Distinction), and a Masters Degree in Environmental Science. In addition she has two industry designations, the CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) and CMM (Certification in Meetings Management).
She is passionate about sustainability and believes that the role of business can be transformational in bringing sustainability to our world.

Please join our clothing drive to help MPI donate gently used career clothing to the Middleton Outreach Ministry which is better known as M.O.M. This service provides clothing for struggling men and women for interviews or beginning new employment within the Madison area. Please bring as many items as you can to our January meeting at Hilton Garden Inn Madison West. Tis the season to share with the less fortunate. Lets not loose sight of what is really important during the holidays and help give back!
